About Register2Dance.com

History

For several years while I was living in Atlanta, I taught Argentine Tango with Tango Rio. From time to time, we would bring visiting teachers to town for a series of workshops. Typically, we would have 12-16 workshops and a couple of parties over a long weekend. Needless to say, we discovered pretty quickly that it's a lot of work to coordinate all of the registration activities for this type of event

Being the resident computer geek in our group, I wrote a few small programs to help us manage registration. Over time, we refined these programs and added more and more tools to automate our processes. After a few years, I had built up a nice set of tools, but everything had been built quickly when we needed it. So, the code behind these programs wasn't that easy to maintain.

To fix this, I decided to re-write all of these tools in a way that would be much easier to maintain. If I was going to take the time to do this, however, I wanted to make sure that I built the tools so that any dance instructor could use them. And this became Register2Dance.com

Like all histories, the story of Register2Dance.com doesn't end there. I fully intend to keep adding to and improving this website. So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

About Jim

Having earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech, I moved to San Jose a couple of years ago to do the dot com thing. My speciality is in human-computer interaction and I work as a Senior User Experience Researcher for PayPal. Basically, my job is to understand what it takes to make a website usable.

That said, I haven't done a lot of programming recently except for personal projects like this. So, there are places where this website is not as usable as it should be, but trust that I'm working on it. Your feedback is also valuable in helping me understand where things make sense to me, but not to you.
